Straight from the North Pole; Elf Magic!

The kind of magic dust they use to make Santa’s Sleigh fly!! OK, so maybe we made these cute candy-cane magic potions ourselves but we are having fun pretending that it is elf magic and that we can make all sorts of magical things happen with it. It is also great for table and shelf decoration to bring on the holiday spirit.

Materials to make this craft:

  1. table salt

  2. food colouring

  3. cold water

  4. clear glass jars with lids

  5. funnel or spoon

  6. bowl

There’s a bit of magic called science that you can experiment with while creating this craft.

You need to mix about 2 tablespoons of water with the food colouring to mix with the salt. If you try using hot water it will dissolve the salt but the cold water won’t! Most solids become more soluble with increased temperature. The heat from the hot water increases molecular movement which means the molecules move around more causing collisions with the solids and water molecules. Pretty cool magic!

Directions: Mix approximately 2 tablespoons of cold water and a few drops of red food colouring together, then add half a cup of salt to the coloured water and mix until it’s evenly coloured. Add more salt if needed. Do the same thing in a different bowl with green food colouring or whatever other colour you’d like. After you mix the salt and coloured water together allow the salt to fully air dry (on a baking sheet) before creating your colourful candy-cane inspired layers in a jar. Use a spoon to create the layers and place the salt into the jars carefully over a bowl so the salt doesn’t go everywhere, or use a funnel.

We hope you have fun creating these colourful elf magic bottles! Let the magic of the holidays brighten your day and enhance your imagination. Feel free to tag us on Instagram @acorns.and.aprons if you create these magical elf jars! We would love to see your creations.
